Vinyl Grading Explained – Goldmine Standard
At Allworthy Records, all vinyl is graded using the internationally recognised Goldmine Standard.
This guide explains what each grade means, so you can buy with confidence and know exactly what to expect.
A note on grading
Vinyl grading is not an exact science. While the Goldmine Standard provides widely accepted definitions, some variation is inevitable due to factors such as playback equipment, listening environment, and the age of a record. Minor variations within the accepted tolerance of the stated grade do not constitute a fault.
Mint (M)
- Absolutely perfect in every way
- New, unplayed, and flawless
- Very rare for vintage records
- Sleeves and vinyl show no signs of wear
Note: Most sealed new records are graded Mint, but manufacturing defects can still occasionally occur.
Near Mint (NM or M-)
- Nearly perfect, with no obvious defects
- Vinyl plays perfectly with no surface noise
- Sleeve may show the very slightest signs of handling
This is the highest realistic grade for most collectors.
Very Good Plus (VG+)
- A well-cared-for record that shows light signs of use
- May have faint surface marks or light crackle in quieter passages
- No skips, jumps, or major issues
- Sleeve may show minor wear (light edge wear, small creases)
VG+ records play beautifully and are excellent value.
Very Good (VG)
- Noticeable signs of use
- Surface noise may be present, especially between tracks
- No skips, but pops or crackle may be audible
- Sleeves may show ring wear, creasing, or writing
Still enjoyable, especially for DJ use or casual listening.
Good (G) / Good Plus (G+)
- Heavy signs of wear
- Surface noise, scratches, or visual defects
- May be more suitable as a filler copy or for artwork
These grades are clearly described and priced accordingly.
Fair / Poor
- Significant damage or playback issues
- Typically sold only when clearly stated
Grading
All of our used records are visually and play test graded conservatively.
We would rather under-promise than over-grade.
Subjectivity
Vinyl grading involves a degree of subjectivity. Minor variations within the accepted tolerance of the Goldmine Standard do not constitute a fault.
